How To DIY The Perfect Ceiling Beams

One of the most popular projects of the year has been adding Faux Beams to the ceiling, and it is no surprise with how beautiful the results have been. From adding warm-toned beams to staining them a deep brown color, adding beams to the ceiling will complement the décor and style of any home.

So, how should you choose what beam you need for your ceiling? See some tips below on the selection process.

Choosing The Right Size

Not all homes are the same, and that is why Ornamental Decorative Millwork offers two different sizes of Decorative Faux Beams.

This Old House lays it out perfectly on their blog post. They mention that “the width and depth of decorative beams should be proportional to the size of the room. The bigger the room and the higher the ceiling, the wider and deeper the beams. In rooms with 8 or 9-foot ceilings, beams that are about 5 inches wide and 3 inches or so deep are typical.”

These beams can also be used to cover pre-existing beams in homes if they are narrow enough. Courtney Equall with @girlandgrey recently covered up her old beams in her loft with brand new 5x5 Ambrosia Maple Beams. Read the full story here.

Choosing Your Beam Color

Everyone’s home style is unique, and that is why we offer two types of Decorative Faux Beams. If you have a more modern style, check out our Pre-Stained Grey Beams that go with cooler tones such as blues and greys. This is what Kelli Bateman chose when deciding which beam would look the best on her vaulted ceiling. The Grey Pre Stained Beam went perfectly with her cool-toned kitchen.

For a more rustic and warm look, explore our Ambrosia Maple Beams. These beams keep a natural textured look that brings warm wood tones into any space. Chris Loves Julia incorporated this beam into the Fullmer House kitchen to bring in even more natural wood tones to this space.

If you are looking for something a bit darker, our Ambrosia Maple Beams can be stained any color to match your existing home décor and furniture. Kaycie Chiampi chose to stain her beams dark brown to match her Modern Farmhouse decor and also used our black metal brackets to cover the seams and add a beautiful contrast.
