How To Create A Slat Wall With Boards
Throughout the years, different design trends and popular styles come and go. One trend we have seen make a comeback throughout the last two years are slat walls. Used in any room from bedrooms to kitchens to living rooms, these accent walls bring depth and dimension to any space.
What Is A Slat Wall?
Slat Walls have been around for a long time and are frequently used in modern interior design projects, but they really began to take off in popularity in late 2020. These walls often add beautiful texture and color to more modern and traditional designs.
Simply put, a Slat Wall is a type of accent wall that is created using simple boards in an even pattern to create stunning texture in a space.
How To Create A Slat Wall
DIYing a Slat Wall can be daunting, but the process can be simple with the right materials and equipment. During the Fall One Room Challenge, Gloribell designed and created this stunning accent wall “using the WOAK 1/2”x 2”x 96” Board. She measured and cut each piece to create this effect over one wall as an accent. The result is simply outstanding and the grain of the white oak adds another fabulous organic texture to this room.”

There are many ways you can get started designing your space and accent wall. One of the first steps is to choose your board material. If you are planning on leaving it unfinished for natural texture, Red Oak or White Oak are great options. If you are planning on painting the boards, you can choose a cheaper option such as common boards or poplar boards. If you are painting the boards, be sure to paint the wall you will be using before attempting to put up the boards. This will save you the headache of painting in between each board.
“A wood slat wall is made of vertical strips of wood that extend from the floor to the ceiling. Each strip is 1/2 to 2 inches wide. Width is your choice, depending on the final look you're hoping to achieve. To avoid a zebra-stripe effect, spaces between the slats should be less than the width of the slats, So, 1/2-inch slats should be spaced 1/4 inch apart.”
